SKILL DEVELOPMENT |
How ELA is forming me as a leader:
Self-Image and Self-Worth |
Being a part of ELA has taught me that one's self-worth and healthy self-image stems from actually accomplishing things. To be a real leader, I must go through life fearlessly. I finally realized this past semester what one of my biggest obstacles to taking risks or trying new things is this: my mind tells me I am not allowed to make mistakes. I've been learning to rebuke this lie because it is better to make several mistakes than to not do it at all. If I am to accomplish something, I must first try it. Continuing to improve my self-image and self-worth will not only benefit me but all of those I lead and serve as I will be more confident.

Taking Initiative to Lead |
My tendency has always been to take the initiative to lead, although how I went about this was not always the best. Because of my productive personality, I sometimes led to just get the job done. ELA has taught me the importance of being aware of whether or not I have the best skills and passion for assuming the leadership role out of the team. Since being at UMary and joining ELA, I have learned the importance of following when someone else is better suited to lead the team. When I am leading or even following, it is vital to ignite passion in the group for WHY we are striving towards our goal.

Team Building |
One of the main lessons that was stressed during this last year of ELA was the importance of getting to know the persons on one's team for the sake of building trust. It is very unlikely for team members to trust one another if they do not know one another. This past year of ELA has also taught me the necessity of voicing conflict. If the team members do not communicate that they are struggling or see a problem, then tension will build. Clear and honest communication is what a team is built on. In order for a team to be strong, each member must agree upon the shared vision and goals for the team as a whole. The common goal will tie the team together despite the individuals' differences.

Personal Reflection |
Personal reflection is something I cannot live without. Personal reflection is incorporated into my daily prayer multiple times a day. I have the habit of being self-aware of my intentions behind most of my actions and thoughts. Reflecting on my thoughts and actions allows for tremendous progress to be made on how I grow as a person. It provides an opportunity for me to acknowledge and be encouraged by what I did well. It also provides an opportunity for me to admit the moments I failed and did not act or speak in the best way I am capable of. After admitting my faults, I then have the clarity to make a plan on how to do better the next time I am in a similar situation. Personal reflection definitely makes me a better person and leader.
